High-Quality Methacrylamide for Industrial Applications
Methacrylamide (CAS 79-39-0) is an organic compound with the molecular formula C4H7NO. It appears as white or light yellow crystals and is known for its high purity and stable performance. This compound features both a double bond and an amide group in its structure, making it chemically reactive and suitable for various industrial processes.
Physical and Chemical Properties
Methacrylamide has a molecular weight of 85.10. It melts at 106–110°C and boils at 215°C. The compound has a density of 1.115 g/cm³ and is highly soluble in water (202 g/L at 20°C), ethanol, and dichloromethane but only slightly soluble in ether and chloroform. It remains stable under normal storage conditions but may polymerize at high temperatures.
Manufacturing Process
Methacrylamide is synthesized from acetone and hydrogen cyanide via the acetone cyanohydrin route. This process involves reacting hydrogen cyanide with acetone to form acetone cyanohydrin, which is then treated with concentrated sulfuric acid to yield methacrylamide sulfate. Subsequent neutralization with ammonia gives crude methacrylamide, which is further purified through crystallization and drying.
Applications and Uses
Methacrylamide serves as a key intermediate in the production of methyl methacrylate (MMA), a monomer essential for manufacturing polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) plastics. It is also used in:
- Organic and polymer synthesis
- Textile industry: As a modifying agent for silk to improve weight and texture
- Nanomaterial preparation: For producing antibacterial fabrics treated with nano-silver
- Flame-retardant treatments: Especially when blended with organophosphorus compounds for silk fabrics
The demand for PMMA, driven by industries such as automotive, construction, electronics, and healthcare, underscores the importance of methacrylamide as a precursor.
Safety and Handling
Methacrylamide is toxic and may cause irritation to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. Inhalation or skin absorption could lead to central nervous system effects. Proper safety measures, including the use of gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection, are essential when handling this chemical. It should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from heat sources and oxidizing agents.
Packaging and Storage
We supply methacrylamide in 25 kg sealed bags. It is recommended to store the product in a cool, dry place below 30°C to ensure stability and prevent polymerization.
